Baccarat Rules

If you happen to have already gone through our How to play Baccarat and Punto Banco resource, you’ll know that there are several different variations of Baccarat you can enjoy any time you like. What this fact brings to light is that there are several different ways to play the game and, as a result, several different rules that can apply to any given variation. While this is true, there is still an underlying set of rules that Baccarat games adhere to. These rules form the foundation of standard Baccarat games and carry over from one variation to another as each new style incorporates its own set of rules for more entertainment and rewarding opportunities.

Let’s go through some of the more common rules you are likely to play with in any given variation of Baccarat. Once you’re familiar with these foundational rules of the game, we can move on and introduce you to more advanced topics, such as Baccarat Odds and Baccarat Betting strategies.

Bet On The Player

The first of the three foundational outcomes in Baccarat is the player victory. In this case, you are making a prediction on and placing a wager in the appropriate field on the Baccarat table that favors the player to win. Should the player win, you will receive a payout according to the rules of that given Baccarat table. You will earn even money and not be charged a commission, in most cases, according to the Baccarat table’s rules.

Bet On The Banker

The second foundational wager is when you make a prediction that the house, or banker in this case, will be victorious at the conclusion of the coup. Place your wager in the appropriate position on the Baccarat table to make this wager. If the banker wins the coup, you will receive a payout according to the table rules. You will also be charged a commission in most cases of 5% of your winnings. This is because betting on the banker has a lower house edge than the other two of the three foundational bets in Baccarat.

Bet On The Tie

Finally, the third foundational wager is a wager on the coup resulting in a tie. This is a rare occurrence. As a result, the payout for this outcome is substantially higher than the other two wagering options. When betting on the Tie, Baccarat players will place chips on the “Tie” section of the Baccarat table’s betting field. The tie option has the worst odds for players and, by contrast, offers the biggest payout at 8:1.

Baccarat Drawing Rules

Another way Baccarat is similar and dissimilar to blackjack is in the game’s betting rules. Players and bankers draw cards, just like in Blackjack. However, in the case of Baccarat, there is a specific set of rules for each scenario that Banker and Player must abide by.

For instance, once your bets are placed on the table in the appropriate position, the drawing rules take over and there is no way for the player to influence the game individually anymore. The drawing rules take over and the game plays out according to several conditions. It is possible for the game to end when the cards are dealt, with an 8 or 9 point hand being called a natural. Just as in Blackjack, this top-value hand from the beginning of the game can close out the rest of the progression and send payouts the player’s way if they’ve made the correct prediction. If this is not the case, the game proceeds according to the following drawing rules.

First Deal

When the cards are first dealt, both the Player and Banker receive two cards Players and the Banker will initially receive two cards. The value of these two cards will determine the next course of action for both the Player and the Banker.
If the Player or Banker hold a hand valued at 8 or 9 points, they must stand with that hand and the progression continues to the next participant.

Player-specific actions

If the player’s hand is valued at 6 or 7, they must stand. Play continues with the Banker. If the Player stands with this result, the Banker must draw a card if their hand is valued at 5 points or lower. If the Player has a hand valued at 5 points or lower, then the Player must draw a third card.
In the event that a Player has drawn a third card, the Banker will also draw a third card according to the banker specific actions.

Banker-specific actions

If the Banker’s hand totals a point value of 0, 1, or 2, the Banker will draw a third card. If the Banker’s hand totals a point value of 3, the Banker draws as long as the Player’s third card is equal to any number but 8. If the Banker’s hand totals a point value of 4, the Banker will draw a third card provided that the Player’s third card is equal to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7. If the Banker’s hand totals a point value of 5, the Banker will draw a third card provided that the Player’s third card is equal to 4, 5, 6, or 7. In the case that the Banker’s hand totals 6, a third card will be drawn by the Banker provided that the Player’s third card is equal to 6 or 7. Finally, if the banker’s hand is equal to 7, they are forced to stand.
